Tarifa Has No Airport – Five Ways to Fly In
There is no Tarifa airport: the town has no commercial airport of its own. The nearest is Gibraltar (GIB), 50 km away, followed by Jerez (XRY), Málaga (AGP) and Seville (SVQ), plus Tangier (TNG) by ferry. From the UK, Gibraltar is the short hop, with British Airways and easyJet flying in from five British airports.
The key facts
Tarifa airport: the five realistic ways in
Tarifa sits at the southern tip of mainland Spain, facing Morocco across the Strait. It never got an airport. So you fly somewhere else and cover the last stretch by road or by boat.
Which airport works depends on where you start. The town’s tourist office puts Gibraltar at 50 km, Jerez at 135 km, Málaga at 150 km and Seville at 220 km. Drive times vary between sources: the tourist office says one hour from Jerez, the travel site Costasur says an hour and a half. That is why the table shows ranges, with 1 to 1.5 hours for Jerez, 1 hour 40 to 2 hours for Málaga and around 2 hours for Seville. For Gibraltar the tourist office gives 30 minutes.

Gibraltar – the short hop from Britain
If you live in the UK, start here. According to Gibraltar Airport, British Airways and easyJet fly to Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Manchester. Nothing else leaves the Rock on a scheduled basis, so this option only works if one of those five is near you.
The border changed this summer. From 15 July 2026 the UK-EU Agreement on Gibraltar applies provisionally, and the UK Foreign Office describes two checks at the airport: Gibraltar immigration first, then Spanish officers for Schengen entry, including registration under the Entry/Exit System (EES). ETIAS will follow once it is running. After that you can walk across the land border into Spain without another passport check.
One catch matters for longer stays. British nationals can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa, and the Foreign Office says time in Gibraltar now counts alongside time in the Schengen Area. A month on the Rock followed by two months kiting in Tarifa uses up the whole allowance.
Without a car, walk over to the bus station in La Línea and take line M-120 to Algeciras. The timetable of the Campo de Gibraltar transport consortium shows 45 minutes for that leg. Line M-150 then takes another 45 minutes to the bus stop in Tarifa. Once a day the M-260 runs straight through, leaving La Línea at 07:00 and arriving at 08:00. Our guide to public transport in Andalusia explains the consortium card and fares.
Bringing a board? British Airways carries a surfboard up to 240 cm long and 75 cm wide as part of your checked allowance, packed in a protective bag and under 23 kg. easyJet lists surfboards as large sports equipment up to 32 kg. Neither airline names kiteboards specifically. Ask before you book, not at the check-in desk.
Planning to live in Spain and work on the Rock? The treaty reshapes that commute as well, and our guide to working in Gibraltar covers the details.
Jerez – Jet2, TUI and a link via Madrid
Jerez is the next option inland. Aena’s airline list shows Jet2 from Birmingham, Leeds/Bradford, London Stansted and Manchester, plus TUI Airways from London Gatwick. The list gives no dates or seasons. Check with the airline before you commit to a winter booking.
Coming from the US? The logical connection is Madrid, because Iberia flies Madrid to Jerez according to the same Aena list. From there you are 135 km from Tarifa.
The C-1 commuter train stops at the airport and runs via Jerez, El Puerto de Santa María and San Fernando to Cádiz. Aena says it operates 365 days a year, per its rail page. In Cádiz you switch to a Transportes Generales Comes coach to Tarifa. Driving, the tourist office routes you along the motorway to Vejer and then south on the coast road.

Málaga and Seville – more flights, longer drive
Málaga has the biggest choice by far. Aena lists 60 airlines there. British Airways flies from Heathrow, BA Euroflyer from Gatwick and British Cityflyer from London City, while Jet2 covers 12 UK airports and TUI Airways 8. Aer Lingus connects Dublin and Cork. The price is distance: 150 km to Tarifa.
Seville is furthest out, at 220 km. Aena shows Ryanair serving Manchester, Luton, Stansted, Edinburgh, Dublin and Cork. easyJet adds Bristol, Liverpool and Gatwick, BA Euroflyer and Vueling both fly to Gatwick, Vueling also to Heathrow, and Wizz Air UK links Seville with Luton. Plenty of routes. A long drive after landing.
Comes runs direct coaches to Tarifa from both cities, according to the Tarifa tourist office. Those depart from the city, not the terminal, so allow for a transfer into town first. Our guide to the Málaga airport transfer shows the cheapest way in.
Tangier – arriving by sea
This is the unusual route. Baleària sails from Tanger Ville to Tarifa in about one hour, with up to 6 departures a day by its own account. You step off in Tarifa’s harbour, right by the old town.
It makes sense if you are touring Morocco anyway and fly in or out of Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG). You cross an external Schengen border, so expect passport control and build in time. The airline guide of ONDA, Morocco’s airport operator, could not be reached on 23 September 2026, which is why this comparison lists no routes for Tangier.
Car, bus or transfer – matching the last leg to your arrival
The bus is cheap but runs to a timetable. The last M-150 leaves Algeciras at 21:15 on weekdays, the first at 07:05. Land late, travel with kids or carry kite gear, and a car or a pre-booked driver becomes the realistic choice.
A hire car gives you the most freedom at Málaga, Jerez or Seville. Aena lists rental desks at Jerez airport itself. Staying for months rather than weeks? Read our guide to long-term car rental in Spain first, because the contract length drives the price.
Flights run late, and connections die with them. If a delay leaves you stranded after the last bus, you may be owed money by the airline, and our guide to a flight delay in Spain explains how to claim.
Our insider tip:
Booking Jerez for a winter stay? Confirm the airline flies that month before you pay for accommodation. If the route is summer only, Málaga with 60 airlines on the Aena list is the obvious fallback, even though the drive to Tarifa is longer.
That leaves the final stretch, 135 km from Jerez or 150 km from Málaga, usually after a long travel day and with luggage that will not fit on a coach rack. Picking up your own car at the terminal means no timetable and no change of bus.
Our recommendation: Car hire comparison with DiscoverCars
DiscoverCars compares rental offers from several suppliers in one search, so you see the same car class side by side at the airport you land at. Pick a model with room for a board bag and add cover at booking, before you reach the desk.

Frequently asked questions
Getting there is the easy part of a move. If you are weighing a longer stay on the Costa de la Luz, you will need a plan for visas, residency, tax and budget. Run your monthly numbers first with our budget calculator, and browse the relocation section for the paperwork.
Verdict
Tarifa has no airport, and Gibraltar is the closest at 50 km, with direct flights from five UK airports. Since 15 July 2026 you clear Gibraltar and Schengen checks at the airport and then cross into Spain without stopping. Jerez at 135 km and Málaga at 150 km cover everyone else.
Where it really hurts is the 90-day rule. Days on the Rock now count towards your Schengen total, so a long stay split between Gibraltar and Tarifa can run out sooner than you think. Count every day from the day you land, and plan the trip home before you book the trip out.
