Your Budget Check: The Ultimate Cost Calculator for Andalusia
Calculate your monthly fixed costs – honest, realistic, and with no nasty surprises
What does life in the south really cost? Many estimates online are outdated or sugarcoat reality. Our Andalusia cost calculator is based on current 2026 figures and our on-the-ground experience. Use the sliders to run through your personal scenario – from a simple life in a white village to an upscale lifestyle on the Costa del Sol.
Important Note: This interactive cost calculator for Andalusia serves as a guide based on current average values for 2026. Since every lifestyle (and every rental contract) is unique, actual costs may vary. We are not financial or tax advisors. Please always verify important financial decisions on a case-by-case basis.
The Reality Behind the Numbers: The 6 Biggest Expenses
The cost calculator above gives you a rough total. But Andalusia can be tricky: While wine and olive oil are cheap compared to back home, electricity and rent can quickly blow your budget. Here we break down the 6 biggest expenses for 2026 – and show you how to keep them down.
1. Housing: Rent & the Hidden “Comunidad”
Rent is your biggest expense. But beware: Many Spanish property listings do not include the so-called Comunidad (community fees). In complexes with a pool and gardener, this can easily add an extra €150 to €300 per month.
- Rule of thumb: On the coast (Marbella, Málaga), you will pay about 30-40% more for the same standard than inland (Jerez, Seville hinterland).
- Our top saving tip: Never pay your deposit and first rent using an expensive foreign bank account with high transfer fees. Use an account with a Spanish IBAN, such as Revolut or N26.
- Read our detailed guide: Renting a Property in Spain – Avoiding the Pitfalls.
2. Utilities: The Spanish Electricity Shock
Electricity prices in Andalusia aren’t extremely high per se. However, if you leave the air conditioning (Aire Acondicionado) running 24/7 in summer and the electric heating on in winter, you’re in for a nasty surprise (bills over €200 are not uncommon).
- Internet: Fiber optic is standard almost everywhere and costs between €10 and €40 per month, depending on the provider.
- Water: Usually cheap, unless you have a private pool that needs filling.
3. Healthcare: Why You Need Private Insurance
If you move here without a permanent Spanish employment contract (e.g., as a retiree or living off savings), the Spanish authorities strictly require private health insurance for your residency application (Residencia).
- Costs: Around €50–€80 a month for a healthy 40-year-old.
- Important: It must be “sin copago” (no co-payments) and “sin carencias” (no waiting periods), otherwise your Residencia application will be rejected!
- Tip: For expats, we recommend specialized brokers like InnoInsure, who offer English-speaking services and tailored contracts. Read more in our article on Health Insurance in Spain.
4. Groceries & Lifestyle
Here’s where you win! Fresh vegetables, fish, and meat at the local market (Mercado Central) are significantly cheaper and of higher quality than in the UK or Northern Europe.
- Dining out: A set lunch menu (Menú del Día with 3 courses incl. a drink) can often be found for €10–€14 away from the tourist hotspots.
- Coffee: A Café con Leche rarely costs more than €1.50.
5. Mobility & Transport
Without a car, you are pretty much stranded in Andalusia (outside the city centers of Málaga or Seville). We explain how to bring your foreign car to Spain in our Car Import Guide.
- Insurance: Similar levels to the UK or Northern Europe.
- Petrol/Gas: Often 10–15 cents cheaper per liter than up north..
Taxes & Gestoría (Often Forgotten!)
Spain is no tax haven (unless you fall under the Beckham Law). You will need an accountant/administrative agent (Gestoría) for your Spanish tax returns and dealing with authorities.
- Gestoría costs: For a private individual, about €50–€100 per year for the tax return.
- For freelancers (Autónomo): About €60–€90 per month.
